Issue #2 - DAOs Take Over ⚒️

A DAO Crowdfunds A Golf Course & Eminem Splurges

By Noah Edelman  • Jan 5, 2021

gm Shifters,

Welcome back to Shift, your guide to crypto news, opportunities, and trends explained in a  way that can be understood by anyone, not just crypto-natives.

Each week we'll bring you curated pieces about the biggest stories in web3, NFTs, and DAOs and what each means for the industry. We'll also plug some job and bounty opportunities at the end of each issue, so if you're eager to dive into crypto and make some 💰, make sure to subscribe below.

In Today's Issue

→ A DAO might buy a golf course

→ Blockbuster comes back from the dead

→ Eminem spends $462k on whatttt?

LinksDAO, a decentralized autonomous vehicle, just raised $10.5 million from an NFT collection in an effort to buy its own crowdfunded golf course. Their vision is to reinvent the "modern golf and leisure club" by enabling a community-first organization made possible through the distributed nature of DAOs.

🤳 Members of the two types of NFTs will be provided with exclusive perks, like the discounted golf tee times and access to memberships at the first physical gold club

🌬 LinksDAO plans to launch a LINKS governance token soon, which would enable NFT holders to determine decision-making and power within the organization. Holders of the token might be allowed to vote on the location of the club, for instance.

😲 This project, while merely in its initial stages, represents yet another effort to achieve a collective aspiration through blockchain-enabled tools, following in the footsteps of ConstitutionDAO which raised $40M to buy an original copy of the constitution last month.

Blockbuster Video is attempting to supercharge the digital community to revive itself from the dead. The 1985 video rental company created a DAO to buy back the brand from Dish Network and turn it into a decentralized film (DeFilm) and streaming platform in which decisions are made on a blockchain.

💀 Like AMC and GameStop did in 2020, Blockbuster is attempting to revitalize its business by organizing a wide scale social-media effort in the form of a DAO & NFT drop.

📉 The company used to have 6,000 global stores and be valued at over $8 billion. Today, only 1 store exists.

💱 Like LinksDAO, BlockbusterDAO intends to raise $5 million through a grassroots NFT minting event in which each NFT is worth 0.13 Ether (or ~$501).

Eminem just spent $462,000 on a Bored Ape NFT that looks exactly like him. Yup, you read that right. The rapper just became the newest member of the "Bored Ape Yacht Club"—10,000 ape-looking digital collectibles— after buying a non-fungible token nicknamed "EminApe" from the creator GeeGazza.

⛓ The Bored Ape includes a gold chain necklace and the khaki army cap that Eminem wears in real life.

✳️ This isn't Eminem's first time dabbling in crypto. He owns several NFTS which can be viewed on his OpenSea account Shady Holdings.

📸 This purchase marks an ongoing trend of influencers entering web3. We've seen people like Paris Hilton, John Cena, and Steph Curry enter this incredible industry over the last 12 months.
